Review: Jason Universe: Sweet Revenge – New Mask… That’s About It

The Friday the 13th franchise has always walked a fine line between blood-soaked spectacle and character-driven slasher storytelling. Unfortunately, Jason Universe: Sweet Revenge demonstrates just how far the needle has tipped in the wrong direction. Stripped of any meaningful narrative, the short-form entry plays less like a legitimate installment in a legendary series and more like a stitched-together highlight reel of inventive kills. Without substance to ground its characters, the film sacrifices the tension and dread that once defined Jason Voorhees’ legacy.

The decision to reintroduce Jason in a short film speaks volumes about the studio’s lack of commitment to the franchise. Instead of a bold relaunch, we’re given something that feels disposable, a toe dipped in the water rather than a confident stride forward. While the production value and acting deserve recognition—polished camera work and decent performances prove capable hands are behind the project—they are undermined by a reliance on gore that often feels misplaced. Worse, the over-lighting of physical effects robs them of their menace, exposing makeup and prosthetics in ways that make the piece feel closer to a fan film than an official continuation.

That comparison isn’t flattering, either. Over the past decade, Friday the 13th fan films have arguably done a better job expanding Jason’s world, taking risks with lore and tone that this short refuses to explore. What we’re left with is a project too safe, too familiar, and too eager to serve nostalgia rather than build something fresh.

Ultimately, a franchise that was already run into the ground by endless repetition should not be revived with more of the same. Jason Universe: Sweet Revenge plays it safe when it needed to be bold, content with retreading old ground instead of carving new paths. The result isn’t a rebirth—it’s a reminder of why Jason was laid to rest in the first place.
