The Perfect Halloween Surprise! IT: Welcome to Derry Drops a Brand-New Episode TODAY!

Well, Happy Halloween, horror fans! Apparently, the folks behind Pennywise decided we deserved a treat this year instead of another traumatizing trip through the sewers.

Just when we thought we had our Halloween viewing schedules figured out, HBO Max went ahead and pulled one hell of a surprise out of its blood-soaked hat.

A brand-new episode of IT: Welcome to Derry has dropped TODAY, October 31, and it’s available to stream RIGHT NOW!

That’s right. No countdown. No agonizing wait for Season 2. Just an unexpected Halloween gift from one of the most delightfully disturbing towns in horror history.

And honestly? We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate the holiday.

A Story of Derry: Going Back Before Pennywise

The surprise installment, appropriately titled A Story of Derry, is a roughly 30-minute special that takes audiences hundreds of years into the past, long before the events of the original series.

Rather than simply delivering another round of murderous clown antics, the special digs deeper into the mythology surrounding the ancient evil that would eventually terrorize generations of Derry residents.

The story follows three young people who venture into the mysterious Western Wood, only to encounter a terrifying ancient presence.

At the center of the story is Necani, played by Kiawentiio, whose journey explores the history of the fictional Shokopiwah people and their encounters with the malevolent force that would eventually become synonymous with Pennywise.

If you’ve been fascinated by the history of IT, the Shokopiwah people, and the supernatural forces that have haunted Derry for centuries, this sounds like exactly the kind of mythology-building treat you’ve been waiting for.

The special is directed by Tazbah Chavez and written by Cherie Dimaline and Jasmyne Flournoy. It also features Zahn McClarnon, adding another familiar face to the expanding Stephen King universe.

And while we certainly love Bill Skarsgård’s terrifying portrayal of Pennywise, there’s something equally unsettling about exploring the evil that existed long before the dancing clown became its most recognizable face.

Sometimes the scariest monsters are the ones we haven’t fully seen yet.

The Perfect Appetizer Before Season 2

Of course, this unexpected Halloween release also arrives as fans eagerly anticipate the second season of IT: Welcome to Derry.

The series has already been renewed, with its next chapter set to travel backward to 1935, during the Great Depression.

That season will explore the infamous Bradley Gang massacre, another particularly gruesome chapter in Derry’s bloodstained history that Stephen King readers will recognize.

The series’ approach to moving backward through Derry’s history is one of its most intriguing creative decisions. Rather than simply continuing forward, we’re peeling away the layers of a town that has been rotten to its core for centuries.

And this new Halloween special offers another opportunity to explore those darker corners of King’s mythology while we wait.

Halloween Just Got a Little Better

Let’s face it. Halloween is practically a religious holiday around the Horror-Fix offices, and an unexpected trip back to Derry is exactly the sort of surprise we can get behind.

Whether you’re spending tonight revisiting your favorite horror classics, handing out candy, or trying to convince yourself that the strange noises coming from the basement are probably just the furnace, you’ve officially got something new to add to the watchlist.

Best of all, this isn’t just another teaser promising something months down the road.

It’s here. It’s streaming. And it’s Halloween.

So grab your popcorn, turn down the lights, and head back to Derry.

Just remember: if somebody offers you a red balloon tonight, maybe keep walking.
