BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE ESTRANGED
SMALL TOWNS HAVE LONG MEMORIES
Greetings from Braddock, Texas.
Heather and Albion were best friends on the cusp of becoming more when Heather was accused of murder. Now, 13 years later, Heather has returned to town hoping to reconnect with Albion. But when a series of mysterious deaths occur, Heather is once again the prime suspect.
Can the pair discover the truth before they’re torn apart forever?
The Estranged: Issue One is currently live on Kickstarter. We have some fun, limited-supply early-bird perks, so check it out if you can.
The Estranged is my first time working with artist Matthieu Perreira, and the results have exceeded my expectations. He and I met on Instagram a few years ago and started a conversation that quickly turned into a collaboration. I conceived The Estranged specifically for him, hanging images of his other work in my office and marinating in his style before I started the script.
Early in the process, Mathieu had to ideate the look of our characters. The challenge was that the book spans multiple eras. So we started with the characters as they were in 2006, at the book’s opening. Below are his sketches for Albion at 17.
Heather, Albion, Bill the neighbor and Deputy Ryan. The surviving participants of the 2006 “Braddock Tragedy.”
Below is Heather at 17 and his first crack at the “Monster of Braddock”
We had a harder time landing on the designs for the “monster.” This took multiple rounds, and I’ve omitted the final design so I don’t spoil it when you read the book, but even then, nothing in this story is as straightforward as it seems.
