Inside the Mind of Angela Baker: Felissa Rose Talks Sleepaway Camp at Central Illinois Horror Con

Few characters in slasher history have inspired as much fascination, debate, and outright shock as Angela Baker from the 1983 cult classic Sleepaway Camp. More than four decades after the film first traumatized unsuspecting audiences, Angela remains one of horror’s most recognizable—and psychologically complicated—killers.

But what does the actress behind Angela actually think about the character?

Going Straight to the Source

At this year’s Central Illinois Horror Con, interviewer EJ Lutze had the opportunity to spend some time with Felissa Rose, exploring her interpretation of the character that helped cement her place in horror history.

And with Dave joining the conversation, the interview offers an opportunity to look at Angela Baker from a perspective that fans don’t always get to hear.

Rather than simply revisiting the film’s infamous ending, the discussion explores how Rose interprets Angela, what makes the character so enduring, and the complexities that continue to fuel conversations among horror fans more than forty years later.

After all, Angela Baker isn’t your typical masked maniac. Her story is tangled in trauma, identity, isolation, and a particularly disturbing history that separates Sleepaway Camp from many of its slasher contemporaries.

And who better to help us understand her than the person who brought her to life?

Understanding One of Horror’s Most Complicated Killers

There’s a reason Sleepaway Camp continues to occupy such a peculiar place in horror history. While the early 1980s produced no shortage of summer-camp slashers, few introduced a character quite like Angela Baker.

Quiet, withdrawn, and frequently subjected to cruelty by those around her, Angela initially appears to be more victim than villain. But beneath the surface lies a deeply unsettling story that challenges the audience’s expectations of who the killer really is.

Of course, the film’s legendary final moments have become an indelible part of horror history. Yet reducing Angela to that single shocking revelation overlooks much of what makes the character so fascinating.

Her story raises questions about childhood trauma, identity, and the lasting consequences of abuse. It’s also a character whose portrayal and underlying themes have become subjects of considerable debate as audiences revisit the film through a modern lens.

That’s precisely what makes hearing Felissa Rose’s own perspective so interesting. While fans have spent decades interpreting Angela’s motivations, Rose has a unique relationship with the character, having helped bring her to the screen in the first place.
