HERESY

Hailed as ‘a visual feast… pitch-perfect… a heart-wrenching and gorgeous piece of folk horror’ an infertile woman is ostracised and accused of witchcraft when a dark entity latches onto her, in critically acclaimed feature from Didier Konings

‘Sharp… memorable folk-horror debut… this fable’s feminist credentials howl out unmistakably… Konings could shape up as a possible successor to the likes of Robert Eggers and Ari Aster’
The Guardian

‘A visual feast… pitch-perfect… a heart-wrenching and gorgeous piece of folk horror that gets to the frustrating heart of being seen as nothing more than a vessel for childbirth’
★★★★
Dread Central

‘Beautifully crafted… Filmed and framed in a classical painting style… makes medieval misery look ravishing’
★★★★
The People’s Movies

‘One of the most satisfying good-for-her films of the last few years… If you like folklore horror or great cinema in general, you cannot miss this feature for anything’
Cut to the Take

Salvation can be found in the darkest of places in Heresy, Didier Konings’ (Thor: Love and Thunder, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) lauded folk horror fable, that’s steeped in religious terror and repression and has drawn comparisons to Robert Eggers’ The Witch.

Garnering praise galore on its festival run Heresy is now set to make its highly anticipated UK digital debut on 28 September, courtesy of GrimmVision.

In a small Dutch village in the Dark Ages, Frieda (Anneke Sluiters) attempts to be a good wife, contributing to her community, saying her prayers, focusing on becoming a mother and doing what is expected of her.

But after a traumatic encounter with one of the villagers in the woods, a presence saves Frieda’s life, latching itself onto her and throwing her belief system into question. Returning from the woods unscathed, her community becomes suspicious that it was not God who brought her back safely, but a dark force cloaked in fog that lurks beyond the forest.

As the otherworldly creature follows Frieda, strange things start to occur in the village, and Frieda is accused of witchcraft. As she tries to defend herself, her rage only grows and her family and friends turn their backs on her in the name of God.

Heresy is a haunting tale of misogyny, bodily autonomy and belief that transcends time and language, wound into an unmissable, gut-wrenching, ‘stellar psychedelic folk horror’ (Dread Central).
