The best horror shorts (films under 30 minutes) are often just as effective and impactful as full length features. They can also make for a great break from reality, a moment of escapism when you don’t have a lot of time to spare—like at work or between classes. And there’s one area where horror shorts are far superior to their 3-Act counterparts: They almost always leave you wanting more!
For my first Quick Fix of 2016, I thought I’d bring you something a little different. The German techno-metal band Rammstein brings a theatrical element to their live performances and a cinematic quality to their videos. For example: The video for DU HAST is a Reservoir Dogs-esque gangster story, SONNE is a perverted reimagining of Snow White, and ROSENROT is a 17th Century forbidden romance between a monk and a teenage girl.
Rammstein released VIDEOS in 2012, a chronological collection of the band’s entire videography that included something new: A video for fan favorite MEIN HERZ BRENNT. As expected, the band (helmed by director Zoran Bihać) produced something fantastic. It’s more than just a music video, rather something fans of surrealist storytelling and short-form horror can really sink their teeth into!
MEIN HERZ BRENNT features alternative model Melanie Gaydos as a female “Sandman” who feeds off the tears of children. You don’t need to understand the German lyrics to find yourself completely absorbed in this chilling Gothic drama, rich in imagery, subtext, and symbolism. I hope you enjoy this dark and beautiful nightmare!
