Review: M3GAN 2.0 (2.5 out of 4 stars)

M3GAN 2.0 barrels forward with the kind of energy and tongue-in-cheek self-awareness that makes it difficult not to enjoy on a surface level. The film knows exactly what it is—a slick, stylish ride that refuses to slow down or take itself too seriously. There’s a pulpy charm to its relentless pacing and a clear sense that the creators are having fun playing in the toy box they built in the first film.

That said, the franchise’s pivot from horror-thriller to sci-fi-comedy-action territory is jarring—and not always in a good way. Gone is much of the tension and creep factor that made the original M3GAN stand out. In its place is a genre-blending stew that leans heavily into spectacle, wisecracks, and gadgetry. For fans who were hoping the sequel would build on the unsettling, satirical horror of the first film, this new direction might feel like a weird and possibly misguided detour.

Yes, M3GAN 2.0 keeps things moving, and yes, it’s often entertaining in a Saturday-night-popcorn kind of way. But the tonal shift comes at a cost. The scares are fewer, the stakes feel lighter, and the emotional core that grounded the original has been largely replaced by bombast. In chasing broader appeal, M3GAN 2.0 loses some of the bite that made its predecessor feel so fresh.

In the end, it’s a mixed bag: fun in the moment, but harder to digest afterward—especially for those who came for the horror and got a sci-fi comedy with fight scenes instead.
